Welcome to RDG 318 Spg'05 with Dr. Abel
This course is about teaching little kids to read

reading is by Carolyn Abel

The greatest gift is the passion for reading.
It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites,
it gives you knowledge of the world
and experience of a wide kind.
It is a moral illumination.
~Elizabeth Hardwick~

If you can read this, thank a teacher.

RDG 318 is the first course in reading.  In this class you will be learning about how young children enter into the exciting world of literacy.  You will see that this process begins at birth as infants become aware of the sights and sounds around them.  Gradually, this information is organized which opens the door to comprehending the wonderful world of print.

This course furnishes you with a heuristic--a simple model or basic understanding--for how children learn to read. Once you begin to apply what you learn in the real world, you will quickly see that adjustments will need to be made. Over time, with experience and reflection, your understanding will become better refined and your ability to support young readers in their journey will improve.

When you finish this course, you should be able to answer the following basic questions:

What is reading?
What are the prerequisites?
What are the stages?
How do I teach it?
How do I test it?
How do I fix it?
How do I improve it
